What is sustainable Leather?

Leather is more sustainable than most "vegan bags" because it is a byproduct of other industries and would otherwise go to waste if not used. Vegan leather is made from plastics (yes, even some of the ones that are supposedly 'sustainable'). These synthetic materials are often derived from petroleum, take much longer to break down in a landfill, can't be repaired as easily or effectively, and will ultimately contribute to many more microplastics in the environment.

Ethical V. Sustainable

We might use the terms "ethical" and "sustainable" interchangeably, even though they mean slightly different things. Our leather embodies both principles. "Ethical" focuses more on the people in the supply chain, while "sustainable" emphasizes the environment. There is no sustainable world if the people behind the products aren't taken care of. Our leather supports the artisans by paying them above a living wage, allowing them to invest more capital into their communities through business development.

Raw Material

Leather is produced from a by-product of the animal meat and milk, both of which provide essential consumer necessities.

Waste Reduction

By upcycling a by-product of the food industry, leather prevents over seven million tons of waste each year.

End-of-Life

Leather naturally degrades over time through a combination of chemical reactions and biological processes.

Durability & Repairability

Leather is well-known for its long-lasting nature. It is easy to repair which also extends its lifespan significantly.

Circular Economy

The leather industry supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by promoting sustainable consumption and production in a circular economy.

Our leather is vegetable tanned, which means it has the least amount of toxins possible in the leather industry which makes it more sustainable for the environment, the people processing the leather and you as a consumer who will hold your bag for years to come.
